TacPath is a GPS-based path plotting and map navigation iPhone tool intended for people doing outdoor activities, ranging from casual walking to bicycle training. It displays time and distance traveled, average speed, and total energy (Calories) burned when walking, running, or bicycling. The equations used for the energy calculations are based on standard published academic data for Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) activity. A map view shows a trail of crumbs for the entire path, plotted on a topographic map or satellite photo. The current geographic coordinates (degrees, UTM, or MGRS) are shown for geocaching or other use. Finally, in addition to the on-board map display, each entire path can be sent via email, for later review, record keeping, and display in a standard KML map or earth viewer.
Calorie readings are based on MET data and calculations for flat terrain, and are intended only for indicative comparisons. The computation equations were developed based primarily on data in this 2011 standard: Ainsworth BE, Haskell WL, Herrmann SD, Meckes N, Bassett Jr DR, Tudor-Locke C, Greer JL, Vezina J, Whitt-Glover MC, Leon AS. 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities: a second update of codes and MET values.
